The Countdown is a testing event of endurance and pacing for solo entries only and is not for the faint hearted. It is an event format unique to Wimpole 24 and we are thrilled to bring it to the ultra family.
All of our Countdown runners will start at 12:01pm on Saturday 14th September. They will have a maximum of 59 minutes to complete the 4.17 mile lap and must be back by the o’clock. Runners will then have a minimum of 2 minutes enforced rest, before lap 2 starts at 13:02 and they will have a maximum of 58 minutes to complete their second lap.
The Countdown continues, with the running time decreasing and the rest time increasing by 1 minute per lap. This continues for 24 hours. Any competitor who fails to complete the lap by the o’ clock, is disqualified and unable to compete any further. Sounds easy? After 24 hours; you will have covered 100 miles!
Runners may choose to complete laps more quickly than the time allowed and have more rest, but they can only complete 1 lap per hour. There is a massed start for each lap, and as long as you qualify for that, by being back before the previous o’clock, your time is irrelevant. Our leader board will show fastest times throughout the event – purely to add to the tension, as these do not feed into the final results of the race.
Lap 24 will start at 11:24am on Sunday 15th September and must be complete by 12:00 noon to qualify for the finale!
The race ends with a 25th lap. All those who have completed the 100 miles (24 laps) by 12:00 noon on Sunday, will be able to enter the Sprint Finish. This is a final lap of the course, which will start at 12:25 on Sunday and the fastest runner home will take all of the glory!
The following prizes will be awarded:
- fastest 1st, 2nd and 3rd male runner home on 25th lap
- fastest 1sr, 2nd and 3rd female runner home on 25th lap
If no-one makes it as far as the 25th lap, the Countdown prizes will be awarded to the furthest 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and furthest 1st, 2nd and 3rd female (with any tie-break determined by fastest time on the last lap).
